
Flutist Caryn Freitag has performed with many prestigious music
ensembles in several of the world’s greatest known venues including Carnegie
Hall and Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood. She has experience performing as
principal flute in symphonic and opera orchestras of New York University and
the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Ms. Freitag has also performed as substitute principal flute with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra near Buffalo, New York. Her first prominent music experiences were with the Empire State Youth Orchestra of the Tri-State area from 2002-2005 and the American Music Abroad program where she performed as principal flute in France, Germany and Austria.
Ms. Freitag also enjoys solo performance and recently won a concerto competition at New York University with Lukas Foss' Renaissance Concerto. She performed this work with New York University's Repertory Orchestra in October 2010. In May 2009, Ms. Freitag earned a Performer's Certificate Award at the State University of New York at Fredonia after successfully completing two full-length solo recitals. Also in 2009, Ms. Freitag was chosen as a finalist after submitting an online video audition for the YouTube Symphony Orchestra. The collaborative orchestra hosted by YouTube and the London Symphony Orchestra, chose her audition among other flutists from all over the world.
Ms. Freitag is currently a member of the William D. Caballero Ensemble. Mr. Caballero is an MTV Movie Award nominated filmmaker and composer who created the live music and visuals in a documentary video-art film about peace advocacy and human rights in Uganda. The ensemble premiered this multimedia piece for small orchestra and film at the Apollo Theater in October 2010.
Along the lines of multimedia, Ms. Freitag composed and recorded a solo flute track for independent animation, “Bahay”, showcased in the SUNY Wide Film Festival in early 2010. She can also be heard on the soundtrack of various student films from NYU Tisch.
Ms. Freitag is an active chamber musician and is a member of the Washington Square Winds woodwind quintet that performs in New York City and Long Island. The Washington Square Winds just finished the 2012 season as Woodwind Quintet in Residence at the Third Street Music School Settlement. After winning the Music Under New York audition in March 2012, WSWs play frequently in the major underground terminals in NYC.
Ms. Freitag graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Fredonia in May of 2009 with bachelor degrees in Music Performance and Music Business and a minor in Arts Administration. She recently earned her Master’s degree at New York University in Flute Performance while studying with Dr. Bradley Garner.
